Skin rashes

Skin rashes can appear on any part of the body and in all sorts of shapes and sizes – the texture and colour of the skin changes and it can become itchy, blistered, warm, lumpy or painful depending on the cause and severity.

If you are concerned about a skin rash, talk to your pharmacist or doctor as they can help work out the cause and advise you on the best treatment. If your rash is caused by a non-infectious condition, Sigmacort may be used to help relieve itching, redness and any inflammation.

Some rashes are temporary while some are related to chronic conditions such as eczema, others are a sign of an allergy or serious infectious illness like measles. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist can help diagnose the cause of your rash and they can recommend the best type of skin rash treatment to help you find relief.

Some non-infectious common skin rashes where a soothing Sigmacort cream or ointment may be useful include:

  • Heat rash (prickly heat) — this itchy skin rash is made up of tiny red spots and is caused when sweat ducts become blocked and inflamed. It’s mostly seen in the summer months when you tend to sweat more and appears in the areas where sweat collects on the skin’s surface, e.g. in the crook of your elbow or knee.
  • Rashes from insect bites and stings — some people have allergic reactions to bites and stings and symptoms can appear as rashes, swellings or hives. These reactions can be localised to the site of the bite or sting, or can be a more general reaction and affect other parts of the body.
  • Rash from eczema (atopic dermatitis) — causes red, dry, itchy patches of inflamed skin and although there is no cure for this condition topical corticosteroids can help keep it under control.
  • Contact dermatitis — this type of itchy, red rash is caused when your skin touches something you are allergic to (allergic contact dermatitis) or a chemical that irritates the skin (irritant contact dermatitis).
